  • If the steering gear box is removed can the sherman transmission gear shift cover be removed without splitting the tractor. I think my problem is just in the sherman gear shifter.

  • I had one do that to me after a refresh. Either the detent balls or springs were just wrong. Pulled them all, replaced them all. Problem solved. The balls and springs were in a rebuild kit. I do not remember who sold the kit.

  • I've done one once on an 841. It was a fight to get it out and twice the fight to get it lined up and back in. I would not do it again cause it's easier to split the tractor IMO. Depending on which generation sherman you have if top cover has exposed rails you might be able to spray some PB blaster or kroil on them and then lightly tap the shifter with a hammer to see if you can get it into the neutral detent, then tap in and tap up or down. This will only work if inside rails has not been rusted. Even if you only use one range it pays to shift them into other ranges every once in a while to keep everything operational

  • I forgot to mention I have a 1952 8N with a combination Sherman. I can only get into standard gear range. When I push in and try forward or backward. I get nothing. In fact the dogleg gear shift won't go forward or backward.

  • Trying to fix it w/ the steering box removed is like rebuilding the carb w/ it still on the tractor. It can be done, but not easily.

It's usually the shift rails that rust up and it takes some work and time to fix them.

I split the tractor, pulled out the Sherman and fixed it.
