“Yes it said for a 8n the wire goes to the push button on transmission”

Assuming it is the correct solenoid and assuming the white wire goes from small post on solenoid to starter button. The hot battery cable goes to the BAT terminal on the solenoid. The small terminal connects to the starter button.

The starter solenoid activating coil is connected internally between the BAT connection and the small post. The starter button grounds the small terminal and activates the solenoid.

Sounds like you can not activate with starter button but can by grounding the wire. If so you likely have a bad wire connection between solenoid and starter button, a faulty starter button, or you are trying to activate the starter with the tractor in gear. With starter in gear the system is designed to prevent the button from making contact.

  • Was your new solenoid specified for a Ford 8N? Not all solenoids are wired the same even though they look the same.

Where does that white wire connect on the other end?

  • Don’t use wire colors to trace wiring. There was no white wire in the original wiring harness. A clicking solenoid usually means the battery is weak or dead. Get it tested at a shop. Use you diagrams to verify wiring while battery is being tested. The starter motor is wired the same on both the early and the later 8N.

  • Yes it said for a 8n the wire goes to the push button on transmission the battery is fully charged the tractor is. Also 12 volts thanks thad

  • Believe I now understand your situation. You are saying you only hear the solenoid actuate when you ground the white wire. If this is correct and you don't happen to have the meter JMOR suggested, use a heavy cable and jumper across the two large terminals on the solenoid. If that turns the starter, your new solenoid is likely no good.

  • On a voltmeter, connected to solenoid's threaded stud battery terminal, what is voltage before pressing start switch and what is voltage while pressing start switch. Other meter lead to chassis ground.
