  • just doesn't want to start
  • I have had my 8N for around 12 years with relatively few issues. But this year on two seperate occasions I would turn it off to do something only to try and start it back up and it just would not start. After discharging the battery and scratching my head I would jump start it or recharge the battery and away it would go. Plowing, hooking up my disc for a couple small food plots, pulling a couple logs out of the woods with no problem. Now I am just having problems starting it. I did all of the usual things first, check gas and spark and I have both. The last time I tried to start it was 2 weeks ago and not having a compression gauge I just put my thumb over the spark plug holes and I could feel my thumb being sucked in and then blown out. This week I had a compression gauge and I have 85, 77, 85, and 85 pound from #1-#4. I got it to start a few times this weekend and then turn it off and would not start back up. What I ave found is that the plugs on #1 & #2 appear to be wet while the plugs on #3 & #4 are dry. I did replace the plugs 2 weeks ago and they did not appear to be fouled or anything. Now after trying to start so many times they don't look the greatest. Unfortunately this tractor is 2 hours away from where I live so I can only do things about every other weekend. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have fuel coming out of the drain in the bowl. I did take the carburetor apart and clean everything out. So I have compression, fuel and spark. The timing is set to where it was after replacing the points.

  • Bruce asked if it is 6V or 12V and if it is a front mount or side mount distributor so helpful to tell us this up front. Your compression is on teh weak end but I think your problem is fuel and/or spark. The proper fuel test is to see if gas flows at freely at about 1 pint in two minutes. Test at drain plug on carb and through the fuel line to carb. If OK, leave it alone and move on to the electrical system, most likely your true root case problem. A weak or dead battery would be the first place to look. Get it to a shop and test, it is free. A basic trickle charger won't do squat if won't hold a charge. When he's testing, go through the wiring. This is where we need to know the 6v/12v, front mount or side mount info in order to proceed beyond.

  • this is a front mount distributor converted to 12 volt around 10 years ago.
Spark may be a little weak but I think it has always been weak. I did appear to be stronger after I replaced the points and condenser.
I always ground the plug right to the manifold, never tried holding it away. Is holding it away 1/4" the same as setting the gap to 1/4"?
This part is odd but my electrical knowledge is limited. I have 12.4 volts going to the coil but when I mount the coil and wire it in the voltage drops to around 1.4, which I think would indicate a short but I don't see anything wrong and I am not sure where to look or what to look for.
The battery does hold a charge, it only goes dead after trying to start it. I can get it started but it takes forever.

  • I am trying to reply to your feedback. I am entering the 4 digit code and it looks like it is going through but I do not see my relies on the forum.

  • You may have spark but I suspect it is weak. With an adjustable gap spark tester or an old spark plug, widen the gap to 1/4 inch. If your ignition system is in good order, it should be able to produce a spark capable of jumpimg that 1/4 inch gap.

  • 6v or 12v?

    Front or side distributor?
