  • log splitter
  • I just bought a Ford 3000 with rear hydraulics. Will this run a log splitter ? Thanks for your replies. Gary

  • Yes but at 5 GPM it will be on the slow side. A lot of people will tell you its not workable but I have split many cords of wood with a lottle Kubota and 4 GPM. You can speed things up by putting a "high speed" valve on the splitter. It has a regen circuit on the extend function that improves cycle time a lot. I put one on my splitter ($90) and its well worth the money. Here is a short video of it in operation. Notice how much faster it extends than retracts. That video was using a Kubota L3901 @6.8 GPM

  • TheOldHokie: Looks like the high speed valve is the answer. Where did you purchase it ?Is there a name for the unit? Any pictures on how it's hooked up ? Thanks, Gary

  • Various people make those valves. I first ran across the ones made by Prince - $145 from Surplus Center but the catalog says its max is 4 GPM input. I wound up with a noname import from Discount Hydraulic Hose ($129). Its OK up to 21 GPM. I have seen the same valve online for under $100.

  • TheOldHokie: I found what I think you're recommending. From Discount Hydraulic Hoses. A 1 spool 21gpm Hydraulic log splitter Control Valve, 4300 psi detent release. $129. Is this the right one ? Any pics on how yours is mounted ? Thanks for your help, very new at this log splitting/hydraulics business. Gary

  • That is the valve I purchased. It was a little more expensive than some of the other sources but the old one was leaking and I needed to get a replacement fast. I mounted it just like the old valve. Here is a picture of how Speeco mounted the valve on my splitter. The turned it upside down and used a pipe nipple to screw one port into the cylinder. The second port was connected with a length of tube. That's a royal PITA to assemble and I don't recommend it but again I was in a rush and did not want to take the time to fabficate a bracket and make two hoses
