  • Help I have a late model 8N (1951)6 volt that no matter what I do it will not charge I am not able to get the tractor to charge, I have taken the generator to a rebuilder to have it checked out, rebuilder stated generator works correctly, I changed the regulator that was on the tractor with a new regulator still no voltage charge, got another new voltage regulator still no voltage charge, put a new wiring harness on the tractor still no voltage charge. I have double and triple check to wiring and it is correct
Anyone have any thoughts on how to get the tractor to charge!

  • I admit I am pretty dense when it comes to electricity. I see a lot of information on wiring these old tractors and on first glance seem very helpful. However, I just can't seem to understand the whys and therefores of what is being done. Example, you run this wire to this item, etc. My question is why do you do what you do.Can anyone help? thanks

  • Have you tested the battery? What does the AMMETER read when engine is at idle? 8N with side distributor, 6V POS or NEG GRN? Get diagrams and verify wiring is correct.

  • Brand new battery, changed out amp meter still reads 0 regardless of engine speed, positive ground, confirmed the original wiring was correct but I changed out the wiring harness still no change, side mounted dist with the generator mounted on the left side in a sadle mount

  • Verify generator by connecting the two barrel terminals with a temporary jumper. This gives full field current for maximum output. If still no increasing voltage on a voltmeter connected to battery, then add another temporary jumper from Battery to output stud on rear plate of generator. These two jumpers remove wiring and VR from the picture. See voltage increases with one or both?

  • I jumper field and ground terminals on the generator and the voltage jumped to around 9 volts and the amps on the amp meter went to 30 amps. new battery, in effect three different VRs, original two new VRs and new wiring harness still no output on the amp meter. Would seem to be the voltage reg but I have tried two different VRs plus the one that was on the tractor when I got it all 6 volt, positive ground, "A" circuit VRs

  • Looks like the cut out function of the VR is working, but not the field control function. First I would verify good ground to VR base. ThenI would disconnect the battery, remove VR cover, start tractor and use finger or plastic or wood to push the field control contacts closed manually & see if it charges. Sometimes these contacts oxidize and once they have closed & actually made electrical contact the arc blows away the oxide and all is well. If that doesn't work, then burnish contacts with rough paper bag. Do not remove/replace cover with battery connected as cover by short parts together.
