  • Ford 1900 don't start
  • Hello there,
I have an old Ford 1900 with engine number LEM853-15047. I get diesel fuel through the injectors, the glow spark turn bright red when tested, I got compression, the clutch pedal is pushed all the way in to push that little nub to make contact, the Gannon handle is in the upright position as well, but the engine just don't want to start. It cranks and that is about it. I need to know how to start it and if there are any other safety steps that need to be followed. Thank you so much!

  • How did you determine you have compression? Did you do a compression test to verify you have enough compression? What color smoke are you getting while cranking it?

  • Have you tested the battery at a shop? Got a manual? The CLYMER I&T FO-44 manuals covers the 1900 model. SEE LINK BELOW

  • Does the 1900 have a manual or electric shut-off valve?

  • I don't think it does. It's a shibaura 3 cylinder diesel engine.

  • How do you turn the engine off?

  • There are a couple of ways to turn off a diesel engine, other than stalling it or letting it run out of fuel. If it turns off with the key, that engine may use an electric stop/shut-off valve. Or, it could use a manual shutoff that operates like an old-fashioned choke cable on a carb. I don't know what the model 1900 uses but given it's a Japanese diesel I would suspect an electric shut-off. When you apply power, it withdraws and holds back an internal piston from an air port. When you turn the key, the piston then is released and seals the port and shuts the engine down. If it's defective, it won't withdraw the piston and allow the engine to start. He's checked the basics and this is one more thing that he might want to check.

  • The engine does not turn off with the key. It is the long handle that I sent a picture of. If I pull the handle towards me, while I sit, then the engine accelerates, just like with the gas pedal and if I push it all the way forward, away from me, the engine will shut off. The white knob on the panel is for the head lights.

  • Good chance there is a fuel shutoff linkage on that throttle cable. Take a look at what's connected (or perhaps not connected) to the end of the cable.
