  • Will this damage anything?
  • My brother-in-law gave me the clevis hook; or whatever it is called, and it fit in the swinging drawbar hole in the plate under the tractor. I thought it would be a good place if I needed to pull something. However, someone told me that I would damage the drawbar plate if I used the clevis hook there. Therefore, I wanted to make sure if it would be OK or not.

  • We used that same setup once years ago to pull an old drag disk. Fortunately no damage to the tractor. I have a 51 8n with the swinging drawbar kit on it and I prefer it over hooking underneath the differential housing. I saw a picture years ago on another forum of an 8n that the entire back end between the axle trumpets was busted out and you could see all of the differential. I believe the story was the owner hooked a chain underneath and got a running start and tried to snatch a stump out of the ground with disastrous results. You can get a swinging drawbar kit for around $125 less tax. I need to put one on my 49 and also update the PTO to 1 3/8.

  • That seems unhandy and awkward. Why not just use the draw bar?

  • If you use the clevis on the drawbar itself that should be fine.
I have seen drawbar support brackets bent when the pulling was done from them instead of the drawbar.

  • Kimberly,
When I first looked at this the pictures did not open. I think you are OK. For an 8N style drawbar which pulls from underneath the rear support bracket can bend if pulling from it only.

  • Back when our 1950 8N was new we immediately installed a shackle like yours using the original bracket pin securing the loop portion of the shackle with the screw pin to the rear. We also carried a grab hook on a swivel so a chain could be used. They setup was on the tractor for many years and used frequently. When the tractor was traded in there was no damage to any of those parts.
