  • Hey, I have an old,old finishing mower that I can't find parts for, It still works great but the lower seal has started leaking and I can't find a replacement. A while back there was a discussion about using some kind of grease in a gearbox , Any idea's on which grease to use? Thanks

  • Wow! Your over here also?

NGLI 00 Better known as John Deere Corn Head grease.
Mix that 50/50 in a zip lock bag with 90W.
Cut corner off bag, squeeze into opening.

Or be lazy like me, Grab the grease gun and shoot in about 100 pumps of red #2 EP.
that was after I filled in and saw it leaking out. I figure next time around I might just check the oil level and fill it up with straight 90.

Did you get to the other board also?

  • My dad had a Mowhawk 4-foot brush mower that lost the lower seal in the gearbox. The local mechanic drilled the fill plug 1/8" NPT female to install a zerk fitting, and from then on we ran NLGI #2 red grease in the gearbox. I'm sure it wasn't as fuel efficient as the original 90-weight gear oil, but nothing wore out in the 30+ years we ran it that way!
