  • Kromer
  • I installed a new carb on my 8N. Runs great in the barn. Took it out for a test and it dies on a slight incline. Any suggestions?

  • What is condition of the governor and linkage to the carb? An incline is an extra load that the governor has to compensate the carb to maintain rpms.

  • Yes when adjusting the carb it may be necessary to adjust the governor. Here is the 2nd page from the 8N Owner's Manual for Fuel. Get carb tuned right first. When adjusting the carb, it must be done after engine gets warmed up and under load. Only make short 1/8" - 1/4" turns of Air Idle and Main screw at a time and wait until engine speed catches up. Use a long neck screwdriver to make adjustments with as engine gets hot so keep your hands clear to avoid getting burned.

  • More On 8N Governor
  • All of these pages are in Chapter 6 of the 1949 Service Manual.

The governor application gage shown is a K.R. Wilson Tool, made for dealer service techs, and not marked so if you ever see one scarf it up.

  • New stuff today is all made in Cheena and are just cloned clones with no QC or Tech Support and never good to go out of the box. Did you open it and check the float level? Spec should be 9/32", or 1/4" use a drill bit as a gage. Did you check or mess with any jet settings? Do you have your original Marvel-Schebler TSX-241 Carb still? You could have just rebuilt it.
