  • Still Kicking
  • Hey everyone, been a while. Still have the 8N, it still is useful for lots of work, and as always a great source of pride among my fleet. I did retire it from mowing duties though, the 6 foot finish mower was a bit too much for it. I picked up an early 70s Kubota L260 2 cylinder diesel tractor to take over the mowing.

The N still pulls the wagon, rakes and grades the driveway, pulls a core aerator for the lawn, and drags old cars and stuff around.

Back when I still ran the mower with it:

And a couple years ago, getting ready to do some spring cleanup:

  • Guess I need to update my registry photo. This was taken at my old place, and Zoe has passed away.

    The original registry photo.

  • I see I can't edit a post either, so let me try this.

    Mowing mode.

  • I guess I may be the only one who does not know why there are two exhaust lines running from the exhaust manifold. Is that some aftermarket idea to produce more power?

  • Yes, that is a modified exhaust from N Complete. I needed a new exhaust manifold and headpipe and at the time their fancy twin outlet setup was about the same cost as OEM, so on it went.

I have a video of it on YouTube.

    Check it out here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6LYlUKaCCU0

  • Try this.

The kit came with larger jets for the carburetor, as the system flows a bit more air. No mufflers either.

  • The dual exhaust manifold was sold by a company named N-Complete that went out of business a while back. I think it was pricey, at around $350 but it sure sounded cool on the 8N.

  • N-Complete. An interesting former business near Anderson, Indiana. Years ago, I had occasion to buy parts from them and actually visit their remanufacturing facility with a private tour of operations.
Years later I was at an auction in Battle Creek, Michigan. There was an early 9N disaster on the block. It had a welded block, scab tires and a welded aluminum hood.
Any other N in that condition would have sold for scrap.
I looked it over and thought I could do something with it and set in my mind to bid up to $1000. Then I looked around the bidder crowd and I saw Tom Armstrong, N-Complete.
When bidding started it was wild! I watched Tom and another bidder go head to head.
    WOW! Selling price to Tom...$7000.
I got to talk to Tom afterwards and asked him about it. He said he would probably put another $10,000 into restoring it.
I know that it was later sold at auction for a very high price but I do not remember what the amount was.
There was a downside to this story that sort of teed me off. I also spoke to the opposing bidder about the price. He said he didn't have that kind of money. He just wanted to see how high Tom would bid.
