4 speed transmission locked up
Well, this just happened to me. I was in a hurry to finish mowing so I could free up the Jubilee I've had for nearly 20 years for helping with hay starting tomorrow. Alas, I slipped going from 3rd to 2nd and got into 1st for a moment, but then the shifter locked up and will not move. I am unable to get the shift cover off as the shifter is locked into place, and of course the tractor won't run. I tried shifting the link I can see through the screw off fill cover, but that makes no difference. The motor continued running fine when this happened, as long as the clutch was in, but the tractor will not roll. I tried rocking the tractor and moving the shifter, but no success. We have 4 tractors on the farm and this one has been my favorite for the most variety of jobs, but it is just blocking the barn drive now. Any ideas? =Vic=

Re: 4 speed transmission locked up
Were you trying to shift it while it was moving?

Yes, was shifting from 3rd to 2nd, but bumped into 1st on the way. I was still rolling.

Re: 4 speed transmission locked up
Well, obviously you know that it can be done, but the owner's manual clearly states not to do it. I know that old-school "double clutchers" say they do this all the time, but one slip-up has the potential to be more expensive than your current problem. Good luck with it..............Ed

Re: 4 speed transmission locked up
Get yourself a block or two of wood, and a jack. Block the wheels, jack it up, move the rear wheels a bit back and forth and take the strain off the transmission. Now shift to Neutral and get it back to the barn. Yes. You can drive it. Shift it goofy again and you can repeat the jacking and moving routine. Take off the trans cover and look at the worn out linkage that needs repair/replace and the shift detent balls that might be also rusted/varnish glued into position. Others with more smarts will be along shortly.

Re: 4 speed transmission locked up
Thanks for the reply. The first thing I tried to do was remove the transmission cover but the problem is that it won't come off. The shift rod is stuck in the gates in whatever combination of gears (I think 1 and 2) it is in so the cover only come sup maybe 1/4" before it is trapped by the balls on the bottom of the shift rod. I can peer through the fill hole and move the cover side to side slightly, but other than one shift gate I can move with a screwdriver that doesn't help anything, I can't get at the rest. Having tried rocking it back and forth with no success, I am considering trying to pull the tractor backwards to relieve whatever stress it is in.
