  • Power steering on a 641 w/ Wagner 3 loader
  • I have the tractor set up with the original power steering that goes with the system.Question: If I were to ad a priority valve and start using the loader pump to run the power steering will the steering be more responsive and have more power?

    Thanks

  • Keep in mind that the original ps pump operated at about 700 psi. So I wouldn't go much higher.
On the 1965+ 2000/3000 three cylinder Fords the PS setup is nearly identical to the pre 65 Fords. On the larger tractors 4000/5000 the same ps pump is used but the pressure is set at 1100 psi.
There have been many posts on yesterdays tractors forum about guys bending the rods in the steering cylinders after replacing the the steering pump. The culprit was found to be they installed an 1100 psi pump instead of the 700 psi pump.
I would not increase your pressure by very much.

  • I haven't bought the priority valve yet, but according to the picture on Jackson Power Steering the setting was on between 2 and 3.I am waiting for him to get back with me about the setting.

  • Loader pump that does not rely on a slipping belt would be an improvement.
Weakest link potentially being the seals. Pressure relief is where?
    Set to what?
So now you install a gauge on the P/S, hard turn and get the pressure reading.
Use that reading when setting up the loader pump adjustable relief valve.
You might be able to add a few pounds to it without getting into trouble.

  • This is an option I'm considering. It seems my power steering pump is weak.

  • And with a bit of info and a relief valve, it could work.
if you could spec your P/S new, you would have an operational number to work with an not a SWAG.
All things being equal you might be able to spec an automotive number of the same vintage year and be in the running.

  • I have a call in to Jackson Power Steering for that setting.

    Thanks
