  • Generator & Cutout
  • Good afternoon guys, It's been many years since I last posted anything in this forum.

I am doing lots of research lately on the various generator revisions that Ford did for the 9Ns and I was able to finally figure out the generator on my N,(9N10000C with the retrofit strap & tensioner) I don't think my generator works and researching them includes how to test them, my question is, videos of testing says that if it is motoring with test leads, does that automatically indicate the generator is good and charging as it is designed to do?
Also reading up on the cutout and how that works, it seems that could keep the generator from charging the battery too if not working properly, would I be right?

I'm asking because I want to be sure what might be the culprit of why my battery will not charge when tractor is running

    Thanks!!

    Thanks

  • Great, Thank you!!

    Another question:
I also read that a generator has to be polarized, what is the purpose of that and how is that done and would that contribute to a generator not charging a battery too?

  • Re: Generator & Cutout
  • simply a quick short across the cut out or use a jumper wire to do the same from battery negative to the wire on the back of the generator

  • OK, Thank you, and out of curiosity, what does polarizing do and why does it need to be done?

  • The polarizing current magnetizes the iron pole pieces in generator . This magnetic field and its direction determines what polarity theouutput voltage will be when gen starts to spinand needs to match the battery that it is connected to.
