  • 8n tractor hard to start
  • I just bought a 1947 ford 8n tractor. When I try to start it, it will fire and give a couple chugs, then die. When I try to restart, it will just turn over but not fire. If I leave it for a day and try again, the same thing happens. How do I troubleshoot?

  • Farmer Brown gave you good advice. I generally start with fuel to eliminate this possibility. Remove the drain plug from the fuel bowl in your carb and drain it into a pint jar. There should be a steady flow that fills the jar in about a minute or so. If you don't have that, then I would check the three fuel filters in the system to see if they are plugged with trash:

I get my tune-up parts from my local Napa because they have been better quality than the online parts from the "land of almost right." I would also recommend you replace your plug wires unless you can tell they don't have a lot of hours on them.

Come back and let us know how things progress and we will walk you through the process.

    Best of luck with it......Ed

  • I would start with a tune up of the ignition system. That includes plugs, cap, rotor, points and condenser. Make sure the air filtering system is clear. The fuel system should be gone over which includes the sediment bowl and there is a filter coming out of the bowl, I believe. The tractor also needs to have a battery being in good shape to operate.

Addressing these normal maintenance items may solve your issue. If you continue to have problems, you can repost but you need a good baseline having a sound ignition and fuel systems.
