  • 1941 grille ?
  • I picked up a 9n yesterday and I'm trying to ID it. I can not read any #s off the engine block. It has a vertical bar grille with a solid center piece. Were these grilles only used in 1941? I have seen them on 1940 models.
It has aluminum dash. Starter button by trans cover. No trans dip stick on trans cover. Solid trumpet where fender bolts go threw(9n 4012-B2)'39-'42.Zerk grease fittings are on rear side of the front sindles. Left brake pedal is not interchangable, it has the hump. Any clue to the year?
    Thanks, Kirk

  • Here are a couple of quotes from John Smith's site:

    "1940 Serial number 9N10276 - 9N46017
The last big change of the year (1940) was at serial number 9N45899 when a new steel grille with vertical bars was introduced to replace the fragile aluminum grill used since '39. Known as "the '41 grille" it was used only about one year and is different from later grilles which have additional slots in the center bar."

    "1941 Serial number 9N46018 - 9N88933
The tractor was becoming very established and most changes now were minor engineering changes. The grease fittings were moved from the front side of the spindle to the rear side. The brake pedals were redesigned so that the right and left pedals were now different."

All this points to your tractor being a '41.

  • After I looked on John's site I seen where they moved the Trans dip stick to the side at #47508 which would have been into 1941. My tractor has the dip stick on the side. The '41 grille started in '40 serial # 45899. So 119 would have been on the '40 tractor. My tractor also has the 1 piece aluminum dash. Since they changed them during the '41 year(I'm not sure when) I have come to the concluesion that my tractor is an early/mid 1941. That's my story and I'm sticking too it. Thanks for all the help.
