[Reply] [No Email] The 9N Tractor originally had a snap-in battery/gas tank access cover which, as the name implies, just snapped into the opening on the hood. The design was later changed to the hinged style door and a separate battery cover was also introduced. The change may have been due to the fact that the covers got lost often, probably due to wearing out from taking on and off to fill gas tank, and they lost their 'snap power'. It could be that the change was just a safety move so gas spills would not get directly onto the battery as was possible with the original design. Note how the battery is unprotected in the original design. Pictured here are a 1939 9N steel hood with the battery/gas tank access door shown; a reproduction snap-in cover; the cover fitted in the hood opening; and an original 9N-10737 battery cover. Note the original 9N gas tank also had the filler neck positioned centrally on the tank. The snap-in hood doors are reproduced nicely by Roger Forst of Wisconsin.
