  • Mystery Light Strings
  • First off, I have over 70 years hands on experience in electronics. Military, Industrial and Civilian. Like to think I know something about troubleshooting.

I have three, 70 bulb multicolor light strings all with the same problem!

Actually each 70 bulb string consists of 2, 35 bulb strings wired in series, and those 2 sub strings wired in Parallel giving the 70.

The colors repeat every sixth bulb.

On all three strings the first bulb from the plug is out! However if you remove it from the socket 34 more bulbs go out. So current is definitely flowing through the first bulb.

If you exchange bulbs 1 and 6, the problem remains with the #1 socket and the previous #1 bulb works fine in position 6.

I've also checked across the #1 socket with an ohmmeter set on it's highest range for any indication of leakage. NONE!

It would seem the problem is with that first socket but I find none.

Ideas? Please make me feel stupid!

  • Had a similar experience. Went to store and bought new lights. Recycled old lights.
Lots of cool new stuff to chose from. We are all lit up here, just the Christmas tree left to decorate. That is Shirley's job. Good luck.

  • At least I got a laugh out of it!

The tree is Barbara's job in this house also but these are the lights for the tree. Had one string I "fixed" simply by rebending the leads on the first bulb. Of course we both know that is not a fix!

She did buy two new strings Friday but I like to fix things or at least understand them.

These are LED strings and not too old.

Outside decorations have been up for several days. However I will admit we have cut back considerable. Getting older and wiser.

  • Ever have just a ""feeling"" from long ago? No science involved, but I'm thinking in the back of my marble that the first bulb has to be a flasher for it to work.

  • Makes as much sense as anything I've come up with so far. However they worked fine last year as is. Thanks for trying.
