Which begs the question - if you can recover from backup why pay for a decryption key? The answer is simple - laziness. Colonial nets around $500M annually and pays all of that out as dividends. So a $4M or $5M charge is pretty much noise, less work, and possibly cheaper than doing it from backup. Especially when you can charge the ransom payment off as a loss.
This ransomware threat is not new to people in the IT business and there have been dozens of such events in the news recently. A local government agency just got hit here today. Colonial was just more spectacular and far reaching so it made headlines.
