  • FATAL COMBINE ACCIDENT
  • This just happened in northern Michigan. A woman rear ended a combine on a major highway. MSP say no skid marks or sings of braking were evident so they suspect she was texting on her phone. The combine/tractor operator was not injured. I live in a rural area that is close to and in between many cities. We see people all the time driving dangerously and when they encounter a tractor on the road, get inpatient and try to pass around often in a p-offed vein and flipping the bird. Most all of these drivers are young people. I see more young females texting these days even though texting whiled riving is illegal.

  • Using cell phones while driving is dangerous enough regarding distracting one's mind from driving their vehicle, but viewing a small TV screen on a Smart phone to either read or send a typed message takes one's mind completely off their driving concentration in my professional opinion. With the technology available today, I'd think by now that a driver would have to pull over to the shoulder, or safe parking area to be able to text or to read a text, or view photos on a phone.

Though it's been 11 years now since I retired as a 30 year Chief of 43 years total as a first responder, and knowing how the texting technology has increased ten fold or more by now, I witnessed up close and personal many times what using those devices resulted in and the scenes were never pretty. So sad to read about the now deceased 30 year old lady.
