  • Chain saw bar and chain
  • I just replaced the chain on my Poulan Pro 16" I bought a pair of chains off EBay for $21.95 free shipping, Cheap enough ! The old one was shot, I think I sharpened that one one time to many ! LOL
Now when should I think about replacing the bar?
    Thoughts?

  • I might add that I can dress the bars on my Belsaw Sharp to bring them back to square.Cutters with different top angles cause the cut to run sideways.

  • Just look at the bar when the chain is off to see if the sides of the groove are even. Sometimes one side wears quicker and it gets uneven and your chain will lean 5o one side. That is when it is time for a new bar. If you keep the chain well oiled the bar will last a good long time. If you run chain dry it will wear out the bar in a very short time.

  • Sounds like I need a new bar, When I try to cut through a big log the cut will start to drift to the right, this usually happens when one side of the chain hits dirt or a stone, sharpening it usually cures it. I've never changed the bar on this saw. It's pretty beat, guess its time .

Thanks to all for the great info.

  • I normally change them both at the same time.

  • I turn the bar upside down each time I sharpen. But, I have a have an electric sharpener, so I remove the chain & bar each time.
