Detent ball might have a flat spot on it or Groove on rail may be worn. Or nut is loose at the end of the shifter rail that hold the shifter fork on. Would check loose nut first. Can be done thru round cover. Might have to drain some fluid. If nut is tight I would loosen it and turn the shifter rail a half turn and retighten the nut. Try that first to see if that solves your problem. Might also be the pto shaft has a slight twist and is not letting full engagement. I've also seen bungee cords attached to the handle to keep them engaged which is short term and not fixing the problem
