The cotter pins are there to keep the drain hole open so that fluid will not build up in the clutch housing. The transmission seal and the rear main seal are not supposed to leak, but after many year the do. Try to determine if the fluid is engine oil or hydraulic oil. If it is hydraulic oil, it may be leaking because the transmission - hydraulic - rear end is overfilled. It may be overfilled because the previous owner overfilled it, or there may be a lot of water mixed with the oil.
