Start with the easy, no-cost stuff first. What is the condition of the wiring to/from the ammeter gauge? Does it have good insulation with no exposed sections? Do they also have good, rust-free connections?

What type of ammeter do you have - the factory inductive type or the later type with two separate terminals for your connections?
