When I worked for the Weather Bureau in 1968 (our Air Force weather unit had a commitment to provide observers at the Weather Bureau office in Spokane) one of the older forecasters cautioned against relying on climatologists and their so-called statistics. Essentially, he regarded their work as interesting but not that helpful for the real world.
