Maybe we should take a look at whether lifetime appointments for the lower federal court judges is a good idea. Seems like many of them are driven by politics, not the law. The lifetime term does little to protect from political bias. In fact, during an "in chambers" meeting one of our district court judges commented to me: "I can do anything I want counsel, I am appointed for life."
