  • 54b sherman backhoe questions
  • I recently picked up a Sherman backhoe but it did not have the pto pump with it.
Cylinders are a little dirty from sitting but no rust. I have been looking around but can't find the flow/pressure it needs to operate so I can get a pump. Does anyone know anything about them? I just don't want to spend a bunch of money on pump that won't work. The plan is to put this on my 48 8n. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • I still need to know what gpm the valve body will handle. Was told if go with to much it could damage parts. If anyone knows what gpm is needed? That would be greatly appreciated.

  • Have you found the Sherman Backhoe info in the Manuals forum?

The only spec I have found is for the pressure relief valve setting. ...One manual specifies 1100-1200 psi, the other states 1500 psi.

I have an earlier version than yours. ...The boom is round pipe instead of rectangular (as yours appears to be). ...My stabilizer is one piece and can not be adjusted separately (side-to-side)to level the tractor.

My original pump is by Hydreco and mounted to the PTO. ...However, a Sherman Step-Up or Combo trans is needed to get the backhoe to perform at a reasonable speed. ...Trying to dig without the increased PTO rpm is slower than digging by hand (not really, but close!). ...I do not find, or know, the gpm of the pump. ...If you need to buy a pump, I suggest a pump designed to operate at 540 PTO rpm.

Do you have another piece to mount to the 8N tractor? ....Mine uses U-bolts around the trumpets, and a plate which mounts under the fender bosses (on the trumpets) and also to the underside of the differential housing.

  • Thanks for the quick reply Bruce. I looked through those before I must have missed the relief pressure before. So my next question would be using the step up transmission would that mean it's only biting max pressure at higher rpm? That sounds like the original pump was a 1000rpm pump? So if i can hit the 1200 to 1500 psi at 540rpms it should run just as fast as long as the gpms are there right?

  • Yeah I do have the brackets that bolt to the axle and diff. I don't have the step up transmission. I was looking at the 540rpm 16 gpm at 1200 psi will be no problem or 540 rpm 21 gpm but this one at 1200 psi might be a little much for the horsepower. The other option might be front mount but then I have to buy/ find everything to hook one to the crank shaft. I do have an old hydraulic pump that came off the front of an AC tractor
