  • Using "Engine Restorer" product
  • I have a 9N that smokes bad and uses about 2 Quarts of oil when plowing for half a day.
I was watching a video that showed an oil additive that restored the engine, giving less blow by an more compression in sparkplug. I realize this is the cheap way to help the problem. I am concerned that the thick viscosity of the engine restorer may plug up something on these older engines. Any one have experience using this product or other similar products?

  • Usually such products will "thicken" the oil in the crankcase. Names that have been around a long time and have a good track record will give good results. I have used some of these with no ill effects.

Do not think that all your oil leaks and burning will totally stop. Usage of these products will usually help, but eventually, later in life you will be in need of mechanical help.

One thing you need think about is cold weather. Will the thicker oil be a bother in winter? Try some and see what you think. The additive will blend with the oil so don't worry about it causing a line to plug. I never heard of using too much additive and making the oil too thick, but that would seem to be a waste of cash.

Start with a good oil and filter change, and new hotter plugs if you are not already using them. The only additive that I have used enough to feel I can vouch for would be Slick50 products. I like them. I have used others with good results.

    Hope that helps,

  • I just wanted to clarify one thing. When I said "thicker" I should have noted that the additive makes the oil more resilient to heat and wear. The oil become tougher during hard, hot work. Slick50 and others actually help during the cold winter months by making the oil more fluid and able to build pressure when regular oil would take a while to flow.

  • I put Slick 50 in my 86 Jeep 4 cyl 5 speed about 15 years ago. It still starts right up and runs fine with good oil pressure. It sure didn't do it any harm...
