  • Looking for advice/suggestions on my 9n. Having issues with it missing and sputtering for lack of a better description. It's been rewired. All new wires, harness, plugs, plug wires, coil, starter, etc etc. It will start after cranking for a few seconds and run ok. At the moment it has to be jumped to start. When leaving the jumper cables on the battery it'll run just fine. It purs. When I take the cables off it starts to miss and sputter but otherwise will stay running. Do I need a bigger battery? I'm using a regular car battery at the moment. Charging system seems to be ok. Thanks for your time.

  • Rick,It sounds like your charging system is not working and you have a discharged battery.Check the battery voltage before jumping it ,then again when you have it running with the jumper cables unhooked. Low voltage will cause it to miss, sputter and backfire.

  • Hmmmmm..... First thing I would do is clean and polish the battery terminals and connectors. In other words make sure yoy are getting a good connecton to the battery.

  • Doesn't sound like charging system is OK. Tractor 6v or 12v? Are you jumping with 6 or 12v? Measure battery voltage when running. What coil and resistor are you using?

  • Tractor is 6 volt. Jumping with 12. Have not measured voltage when running yet. New coil and resitor.

  • Running ok with 12 but not 6 would lead me to suspect wrong or bad resistor. Try bypassing the resistor and see if that helps. Don't leave it bypassed more than perhaps 30 seconds as coil current will be too high.
