  • Removing Stuck Starter
  • Starter went on my 9n and I'm trying to remove it. I've removed lots of starters from these tractors without incident in the past, but this one appears to have the bendix stuck in the engaged position so I can't get it past the flywheel. Don't really want to have to split the tractor. Any secret tips? Thanks!

  • I would leave the starter intact and pull start the tractor. That will disengage the starter drive. SoS.

  • Like blaster said, slide the body off so you are dealing with just the armature and the front plate. That may give you some more wiggle to angle your end more toward the tractor.

  • Roger,You can get it out by removing the barrel of the starter just leaving the armature to wiggle it out of the hole, like BlasterStumps suggested. If the hole is not egged out yet around 2-3 O'clock now is the time to do that and also clean up the flat mounting flange on the housing shiny and starter flange plate (both sides and end of the barrel) to for a good ground.(it make a big difference in the starter performance.

  • Thanks! I got it out- ground with a right angle grinder on 2-3 o'clock and remove the barrel.

  • If you haven't already done so, you can grind a little from the opening at around 2 o'clock to give you room to wiggle the starter:

  • Might be a bit tight getting a grinder in there with the starter stuck in the way. He might get a round file in there. Maby not. Then there is always the bfh...

  • you might want to wait to see what others suggest but one thing I was thinking was to disassemble the starter down to where you have just the armature and of course the drive and that would give more clearance to wiggle it out of there.
