  • early style steering box - 8n
  • Well, the years of neglect have finally caught up with me. The early style steering on my 8n has failed.

Can it be repaired on the tractor? or is this a complete bench rebuild? Can I still get parts for the early style sector?

    Thanks!

  • Rebuilding depends on where the play is. When turning the steering wheel, the sector shafts should not wobble side to side and there should be no play in the pitman arm to sector spline. The sector shaft bushings can be replaced (they must be reamed to fit after installing) and the worm roller bearings replaced. The housing which supports the sector shaft is eccentric and can be rotated for gear mesh adjustment. If the worm or sectors are worn out then it is probably not rebuildable today.

  • I have two complete early boxes from two of my N's .These came off of tractors I still have. One has hardly any play and the other has a "tad" (southern for almost none).I removed these because I prefer the later boxes. These are in my shop and covered. My Email is open if you care.

  • Yep, my early 8N steering box has been in dire straits for a few years now, but I've been putting off the inevitable, mainly because of money and priority issues. A few years ago I talked with John Smith about this and he said, don't waste your time trying to rebuild it, bite the bullet and get a later box and install it. I'm afraid to of what I might find -how bad it really is, but since it is an early 8N, engine date code: I167 (September 16, 1947) and I have kept her as original as possible, at least with her original 'show' clothes and all, I'd want to keep the box original too. Yes, you will need to pull it completely off the tractor too. One options would be to find a parts tractor and hope it has a better box on it...good luck and keep us informed...

  • Tim, I too have a "1947" 8n except the block was replaced. I don't know if my grandfather replaced it or it was replaced before him. Either way, I like to keep everything was original as possible. I will keep everyone up to date as to what I decide.

    Thanks

  • The early steering boxes were made by General Motors.Just look at the rear bumpers on GMC and Chevy pickups. They rust out at 100,000 miles here. Why keep original junk on your tractor..

  • " Can it be repaired on the tractor?"

    No

" Can I still get parts for the early style sector?"

    No.

You can get a new worm ($400, IIRC) bushings and seals, but not sectors.

Your best bet is to find a 2 bolt box & pitman arms & rebuild that one. (and modify your dash slightly)

These guys should be able to help you w/ used parts:

  • Thanks Bruce. I always like the way you respond to posts...no BS. I have pulled the tractor in the shop and will see how bad the damage is.

Your feedback at least sets the expectation and I'll get right to work.

    Thanks
