  • Okay, went out to bush-hog a bit yesterday. Tractor started fine and mowed about 30 minutes no problem. Run up onto some thick stuff and stall her out. No violent noises, just a gradual stall like it does from time to time. Go to restart and I get nothing, the starter is not turning. The start button acts up from time to time, so I jump from the battery straight to the starter and nothing there either. So, go to the house, get my wife to tow me and figure I'll roll start it. Wrong. 3rd gear steady roll, pop the clutch and both rear tires lock up. Try again, same thing. Unhook the PTO, same thing. Will roll with the clutch in or in neutral, but no other way.

Got it back the shop and will start looking into it tonight, but looking for ideas where to start. Engine seized? Something in the PTO or transmission bound up? Anyone experience something similar?

    Thanks for the thoughts,

    '42 9N, front mount dist, 6V

  • Put it in high gear, make sure key is off, rock left rear tire back and forth by pulling/pushing on top o the tire. You may hear a clunk when it kicks loose. Sounds like bendix stuck to flywheel...

  • Start w/ the simple & easy stuff..........

Bendix is locked to the flywheel.

    Remove the starter to see.

    See tip # 36.

And charge the battery. A weak battery will sometimes have just enough current to extend the Bendix.....and leave it there. (see tip # 60)

  • Good thought, wow it would make my day if it turns out simple as that.

  • Sometimes the simplest solution is the one that works!

Before you pull the starter, jack up the rear wheels, put it in reverse & turn the wheels.

  • Well, you guys nailed it, the starter bendix was bound up. Sorry for the delay responding with the results, but thank for the help!
