  • I have a 1951 Ford 8N,,,,Does anyone know what would case my 8N to bind up when I am trying to steer,,,,,can steer about half way then it just starts to push forward,,,,this just happened to me,,,,can hear a clicking in my back right wheel,,,more like a snap, don't see anything visual bent....I have had this tractor for about 15 years now and most everything else I have repaired or rebuilt,,,,I use this tractor for some farm work,,,just scratching my head,,,,,I know the brakes on these 8N are not the best no matter what,,,,everyone knows they hang up,,,,but not really sure what's going on here,,,,binds up same way left and right,,,a little less when going backward, which I expect....can someone help me....???

  • Block front wheels. Jack up rear end. Shift to neutral. Turn left rear tire by hand to see how it feels and sounds. See if opposite tire turns in opposite direction. That will tell you if differential is working correctly.

  • Steve,,,

I jacked up the tractor put jack stands under it,,,,when I turn either wheel in the forward direction the other one turns the same way,,,,and if I turn one backwards they both turn the same way,,,,they should be going in opposite directions correct....so that tells me that the differential is not working correctly,,,right?

  • Yes, but check it in gear too with both rear wheels jacked up. The shims need to be just right fot it to turn smooth in neutral and opposite you may also try having someone turn the other. If they are locked together then differential is locked up.
Some folks like that, but it makes it harder to turn wih my kubota..

  • I had a brake show pivot plate break in my 8N. seems like I remember it doing similar things as you are describing.

  • Could be something broken and jammed in the spider gears. That could turn the rear into a locker with no differential action.

  • Differential side gears or broken teeth on the ring or pinion?????? Both brakes would have to have suffered the same failure at the same time which is very unlikely.
