  • I have a 58 971 diesel I need some help with. All the gears work except for reverse 2 and the selector is out adjustment a little. I live in Michigan and I would like to find some one that has experience with the sos to look at it and see if they can fix it.
    Thanks
    Nick

  • Hi Nick, I would love to help you out, but its a bit far from me to you ! If you don't mind I have a few questions for you.... You say all gears function except R2. Is there ANY slippage in ANY other speeds, especially Reverse 1 ? You say the shifter is out of adjustment. Will the Park position effect the tractor to Park with no forward or reverse motion ? Is the Starter Safety Switch functional and will only allow you to start the engine in Park Position Only ? Has the transmission been serviced properly ? IE: Fluid Changed, Intake Screen cleaned and examined for Fibre and Metal Shavings ? Filter changed (it is under the Top Cover) ? Bands adjusted (3) ? Do you have a copy of the 1955-60 Ford Tractor Shop Manual ? And last can you determine if it is the original transmission ? You say it is a 1958 model. The Select-O-Speed was introduced as a 1959 model, although some were produced late in the 1958 calendar year. The early transmissions were very problematic, and many were completely replaced. Are there ANY numbers stamped (Not Cast) into the Right side of the transmission case ? This would indicate a replacement transmission. Usually a SOS doesn't lose just One Speed. It is always a Combination of Speeds. The only way I can figure R2 Alone not functional is the Valve Body Cam Wheel not actuating the valve that applies Band One for Overdrive. R2 is a Overdrive of R1 which is Direct Drive. The Transmission is basically a Five Speed unit with Overdrive ratios that provides 10 Speeds. SoS

  • There are a few sos owners here. You may try your local new holland dealer?

  • Forget the Ford dealer. You won't find one willing to work on it. They stopped working on those years ago.
