  • Ford 3000 fuel consumption
  • Anyone own a Ford 3000? Had the 8N for a long time and last fall purchased a 74 3000. Great tractor with lots of power and handles great. It has a Zenith carb. I just noticed though it seems to use a lot of gas. I looked up on the web and the 3000 should use between 2-3 gallons of fuel an hour depending on your usage. I just filled it up and it took almost 10 gallons. I mowed a little last fall and have plowed snow this winter with it. I'm pretty sure the 8N didn't use that much fuel. Maybe I'm wrong. This Zenith carb doesn't appear to have any adjustment on it. I'm betting it does but I do not know how. Can't find any info on that carb either.

  • Threads like this are always interesting.
All too often you get a lot of guessing and swags in a thread like this but fortunately for us we have the great Nebraska Tests which allows us to compare apples to apples.
I think the number you are looking for is what they call horsepower hours per gallon.
They have a couple of different numbers for each tractor based on pto speed and wide open.
    Hp-hrs/gal on a 1950 8N was about 11.2
On a 3000 it does make a difference which transmission they tested. The straight up 4 sp was more efficient than any of them. The SOS was least efficient.
For the 8 speed the hp-hrs/gal was about 11.6
So not a huge difference between the two tractors.
You mention you have a Zenith carb so keep this in mind.
The original Holley was a very efficient carb.
But... After 40 or 50 years the vacuum activated piston which operated an economizer valve (think accelerator pump) is probably worn out. So the Holleys are balky, cold blooded, finicky things.
You could find an original Holley, try your hand at rebuilding it and you'd probably get a substantial improvement in hp-hrs/gal.
The Zenith is far less efficient.
But... If you want your tractor to RUN, stick to the Zenith carb.
Just for kicks I looked up the hp-hrs/gal on a 3000 diesel 8 sp.
    It was 16+
You can see why the ag world went to diesels.
Those 3000s are my favorite tractors.
I spent about an hour on mine today snow plowing the driveway.

  • A ford 3000 has about twice the hp of an 8N.
So it would burn about twice the fuel of an 8N.
But should ba a little more efficient then 2X with the newer valve train.
Gas consumption is a common complaint for a 3000 if you are not using its full hp.

  • My 3000 came to me with the Holly carb. The distributor vacuum line was removed and plugged. With the distributor vaccuum hooked back up it runs better and more efficiently. For the same job I expect an overworked N will always use way less gas than any tractor with twice the horsepower.

  • Checked the hours and it just might be right on what it should be using. When I got it I changed the oil and did a tune up at 2710 hours. It now has 2715 hours so I guess I did use it 5 hours and burned around 10 gallons of gas. I still don't think the N used that much but might be wrong. Would appreciate any info on those Zenith carbs though if anyone has any. Thanks

  • The N used about 1 gallon per hour in its smaller, less powerful engine.
