Got a pic or a link to a pic?
I usually drill a small hole in the flange which allows any trapped air to escape upon initial install and then allows for the hot coolant to get to the bulb and allow a smoother transition open. The smoother transition open and shut diminishes temperature fluctuations within the engine block and keeps things happier. The Japanese figured it out with their stat's, so this is not something new.
