  • Oil pressure gauge
  • Picked up 2 N's the other day. 8n runs with low oil pressure and blow by, will get rebuilt later on.

The red one with no hood(9n/2n?) Has industrial or replacement block. Appears have been worked on sometime in the past, half decent paint job, good hood new gas tank etc. Kinda assuming the engine has been rebuilt.

Anyway, put a different starter and carb and coil on it, and it fired up and drove around the yard. Once in a while it would start knocking pretty loudly, then go away. Oil pressure gauge don't work and I don't have a separate one. Figure maybe the oil pump knocking? Haven't run it more then 15 mins yet.

So what are y'all using for Manuel oil pressure gauge on N's? Or should I just buy another dash gauge?

Also, won't go above probably 1/3rd throttle unless manually moving throttle at the carb, so maybe governor is involved? Haven't looked into that yet much.

  • Dont ASSume anything ,prove it.Engines that start with no oil pressure should be shut down...First buy a NEW gauge.OIL pumps dont knock. You may get noise from a hydraulic pump at high pressure but never engine oil pumps.

  • We had a 52 8N we took in trade that had a rebuilt engine and the head had been planed so much that the pistons were hitting the head. I wouldn't run it again without knowing if it had oil pressure or not. 15 minutes would be a long run time with no oil pressure.

  • I figure it had to have had some oil pressure to run that long, just need to find out how much or if it's fluctuating.

Thing that's making me wonder about the knocking is it's not consistent like any other knocking motor I ever heard. Will come on and off randomly at same throttle.

  • The oil pump could also be losing suction if it happens intermittently.

One possible cause that comes to mind would be a loose oil pump pickup assembly - Easy enough to verify through oil drain plug.

  • I have never heard an oil pump knock - It's possible your oil pressure gauge is correct and there isn't any oil pressure for it to register.

I would try another gauge to satisfy my mind but engine knocking is usually crankshaft related.
