  • How did my governor balls get rusty?
  • So the 9N now purrs like a kitten and starts immediately after tuneup kit, overhauled distributer, new 12V coil, new battery, rebuilt carb, and a complete rewiring...was hoping that would be enough, but it still accelerated quickly from idle to high rpm with no binding on the throttle/governor/carb linkage...soooo we took the governor completely apart and much to our surprise it was rusty...very rusty inside. The balls had no way of turning...another Just8N order for a new governor was placed! As I wait for the new governor I'm wondering if anyone has seen a rusty governor before and what would likely be the cause? I'm thinking sitting outside for decades with condensation attacking it a little at a time. As the tractor is new to me I don't know it's history...I do know I'm learning a lot about the 9N and very much enjoying restoring a piece of history. Thanks for all the help you guys provide. Mark

  • When any machinery sits idle, internal condensation starts to remove the oil film, and those unprotected parts start to rust. When that continues for several years, any protective oil film is long gone.

If your 9N has the oil line to the governor, make sure that line isn't clogged. If yours was made prior to when they added the oil line for the governor, consider adding that oil line (if your new governor has the fitting for it). If this is a very early 9N, the originality of not having that oil line may win over having improved oiling.

Frequent use will keep your balls well lubricated and rust-free.

  • I do have the oil line to the gov and will blow it out good before honking it up...I might even put a pressure gauge on it and see what shows up. Itís a new tractor to me and I plan to use it frequently to prevent it ever having rusty balls again.

  • Kevin. I have several early 9Ns that have govs without oil lines. They are fine inside???? In fact they are in better shape than the ones with oil lines. Don know the reason,

  • Many of those early 9N tractors were doing just fine as originally designed. Anything that does not have a pressure oil supply is relying on oil splashing where it needs to go. Apparently, in too many cases, the splash-oiling proved to be insufficient. Maybe those tractors were being operated in some way that created the problem. No doubt somebody at Ford did the math and decided it was cheaper to add the new oil line than whatever percentage of failures they were getting.

Relative condition of any two tractors today mostly boils down to the entire life-history of each machine. At some point most of them have been sitting idle for periods of months or years. It would make a huge difference if they were sitting exposed outdoors, under a roof, in a barn, or a conditioned garage.

  • Must be a leaky gov'na.
If the balls are not pitted, Spray it all down with PB Blaster and seal it up good when you put it together. Or get a new or used one.
The gov'na must have been hanging out in cold damp places to get his balls rusty.

  • No doubt...how did I get this way...it's just not right having rusty balls...luckily I can get some new shiny hard ones!
