  • I found this and thought some might enjoy reading it also. It's about a rare Ford self propelled 611 combine.

  • Very neat story indeed Larry. Thank you for sharing it. I have seen one like it in a salvage yard about 30 years ago. There were several Oliver versions around here in the heyday of the local Oliver dealer. I remember the dealer salesman giving his best pitch and woo to Daddy on the machine exclaiming "Yassir, she'll starve a chicken behind her". Daddy was a Ford man tho, and had a Ford/Wood Brothers pull type machine powered by a Wisconsin VF4 Air Cooled Engine. The engine was notoriously cantankerous to start. I learned a few new words by listening to Daddy trying to get it started one day. Those combines had the reputation of cleaning the grain so well that one elevator operator paid a premium to the farmer that used one. Daddy did a lot of custom picking with that machine throughout the neighborhood, often leaving his own crop in the field for last. Good memories ! SoS.

  • There was a 2 row corn head available for the 611 combine. the corn head was the revers setup of the two row mounted Ford picker. The right hand snapping unit of the picker was the left hand unit on the corn head, so the left hand snapping unit of corn picker was the right hand of the combine. Wander how many corn heads were built for the 611? I actually seen one in operation at the Iowa State mechanical corn picking contest in 1963.

  • Yes that's it. Thanks. Computer was giving me problems. I thought that was a cool story on a rare machine.
