  • Last year I bought a re-manufactured 10/SI alternator off Ebay, worked great, now this year it doesn't want to charge , At the risk of sounding like a tourist is there any way to fix it by exciting it,polarizing it, taking it out to dinner, buying it flowers, talking sweet to it......LOL

    Thanks

    later,dave

  • HiYa Dave-
Yikes! A rebuilt alternator off ebay??? I'm squirming in my chair...but kind of proves a point not to trust crapola sold there. A new one, no problem, but rebuilt, well I guess trying to save $$$ is the reason, and it is your $$$ and your tractor, but now looky at where you're at. If your trusty starter/alternator shop detects it is shot, maybe you can trade it in for a new one thru him with exchange on core charge. I have to ask too are you sure it is wired correctly? This is on an N-Series Tractor too?

  • If buying a remanufactured (or new) alternator eBay is as good as if not better source than local - typically lower price and you save, gas money, time, shipping and pay no tax. Plus you are likely to get the same thing sold at your local NAPA/AutoZone/Oreilley's/etc.

The simple truth is a 10SI alternator (or clone) is a recyclable commodity not worth the cost of paying someone to fix it. As JMOR says- have the alternator tested at a local parts supply - simple and free. If it tests OK then the problem is in the wiring. If not order another one.

  • Kinda of my point...why buy on fleabay something that can be purchased locally for the same price...and if you deal with a reliable local shop, are going to get better service with less hassle. Ebay sellers can run the gamut between experienced trusty sources to fly by night shade tree mechanic wanna-bees.

  • No. Polarize generators, not alternators. Most are doing themselves a favor to take alt to auto supply store for a free test. Others of us will dig into it, if for no other reason, to know what exactly caused the failure..when time is important, a poor choice.
