  • Ain`t never seen such!
  • I got curious when I seen Someone had soldered them at some time, I reckon they rusted through.. I went a pulled the "Freeze Plugs" outta the "Shifty th` Fifty" And MAN! I had to scrape the crud out!
No wonder the Ol` girl was running Warm...
Scrape, flush, scrape, flush, it was a JOBB, the 4 letter word...
I reckon nearly 70 years does that to one?
Plugs will be here next week...

    Enjoy your weekend,
    Dennis

  • Hell, I'm 73, age of my tractor. A little rust in my bores but still kickin'

You might want to go to Wally World, Yep Walmart. THermocure radiator flush. It's made by EvapoRust. Will get the rust out. But.... it will open any pinholes into bolt holes in any weak areas, elbows, freeze plugs etc. Crap it loosens and the color of the crap that comes out will scare a brave man. $18 a gallon.

    I was skeptical but....

Follow the directions. Don't fabricobble. I ran it through a Ford 59AB flathead V8 in a Gerlinger forklift. It ate a couple of freeze plugs but when all was said and done temps went from a quick 210+ to a steady 185. Your results may vary.

.....or there is Cascade powder, Red Devil lye or Drano. Your choice.

  • I learned a new word today!
  • I'm pushing 75 (real hard!) but still learning! Just learned a word to describe a lot of what I end up doing in my shop - "fabricobble". Love it!!!

  • Hi Lynn,

Unfortunately not original with me. I Got it from a buddy who haunts YouTube watching videos. No Idea where he got it.

  • I LIKE that new word too...
That`s what I`ll call them soldered freeze plugs now...

BUT? These new freeze plugs are convex/concurved and the OrigYnals are flat...
I`m thinking I need to install these with the "hump" outward???
    Or Not?

  • Yep and give it a smack with the ball end of a ball peen hammer or a fairly wide round nosed drift. It will set the plug. I'm old school and use #2 Permatex on the sealing surfaces. Seal the edges with epoxy if you want . Kinda like a belt and suspenders. CLeAN bright metal is your friend.

THe factory used a little more sophisticated method.

  • Re: I learned a new word today!
  • Thanks Tony, I got `em in similarly to your suggestion, but used a "Ho-made punch" from my collection of Ho-made "Make do tools"...
The block busted insteadda pushing out them plugs when I forgot I had water in it insteadda coolant...
I got the cracks filled with epoxy and have already mowed most of the "annual" and regular stuff with it...
I didn`t go with any chemical flush, I am merely draining after each two hour session of mowing...
    Thanks again folks,
    Dennis
