  • Ok, so I rebuilt a 1943 9N to use on my alpaca farm, it came with a front loader.
The engine tested out pretty good, we did a leak down test at top dead center on each cylinder. This was in lieu of a pressure test, I was told the leak could pin point issues better.
Installed a rebuilt carburetor with new linkages, Governor, converted to a 12volt system with electron ignition. The thing starts and runs like a dream, it just purrs.
I did have issue with the governor linkage being to long but this was solve by local restorer but he rarely worked on Fords.
It is way better running under load but I feel in my gut it should have more power.
I cut the pastures with a 5 foot brush hog, which works great if I am in 1st gear but tend to really bog down if the grass gets a little to thick. We are talking 12" grass with the bac of cutter about 2" higher. It is the same with most of the implements I use. The only obvious thing I noticed black soot around the tailpipe.

  • My worn out 9n is able to struggle thru 3 foot grass and a 5 ft brush hog. You might want to check your blades. I had trouble mowing last last and found the blades were nearly frozen up on the large pivot bolts and were dull. After lubing up those pivots and sharpening, I am now able to mow better than before. I do have to keep my hand on the lift for the really high grass.

  • Just for your Information. If it is a '43, it would be a 2n. serial will still start with 9n.

  • Not sure how I messed this up but I looked up the serial number again:
    103574 - which would be 1942 2N

  • Adjust the carb, sounds like it is running rich.

  • You should have power to bush hog 12 inch grass. No problem with a fresh engine. Certain types of grass can be tougher than 12 foot weeds though. A pressure test on each cylinder is in order. Around 90 pounds on each cylinder is going to run fine but with less power. Hope you have over 100.💯
