  • WOW! Who'd have thunk it? Seller (no relation) says new tires and a Zenith carb increased horsepower. Also, a ho-made grille screen kept it running cooler. Gotta get me this one!

  • I think it's those chrome muffler bearings that increase the HP. They always worked for me.

  • The Ford 3000 I bought a year ago has a Zenith Carb on it. I see no advantage at all. I've had no luck finding anything about how to adjust it on the net either. I believe it came with a Holly from the factory. Someone must have put a Zenith on it at some point.

  • There is no real advantage to a Zenith other than they make your tractor run.
The Holleys were overly complicated, cranky, difficult , cold blooded and sucked to boot.
After 40-50 years the pot metal vacuum piston and bore are worn out and the bore isn't replaceable short of a new carb.
Whenever I get one I like to do my best Tom Brady impersonation and give it a heave into the nearest swamp, scrap pile or dumpster.
The Holleys probably did give you a few more horsepower hours per gallon of fuel but I will gladly forsake that better efficiency for a tractor that runs sweetly.
I'm not an advocate of dumping a good ol MS carb on an N or Hundred but the Holleys are past their use by date.

  • I agree, any clean carb is better than the filthy thing currently on many of these tractors. I have one Zenith and several MS carbs that I rotate between my 8N and 2N. I have not noticed any difference in performance between the MS and Zenith. Tuning is the same. I recently rebuilt the original Holley on my 3000. That one starts and idles great, but the throttle must be opened s-l-o-w-l-y when the engine has just been started. Give it a minute to get some heat in the engine and it works just fine. I'm a long ways from pitching the Holley in the weeds, unless it get's a lot more cold-natured when temps get cooler.
