  • Do I need a solinoid?
  • I have a '39 with dash mounted starter button. The original 6V system is long gone and I just purchased a 12V conversion kit. The diagram that came with the kit shows a solenoid being used. My question is can I skip the solenoid and run a resistor, push button starter, and on/off key switch?

  • What's wrong with your dash button? If it needs replacing, JUST8Ns sells one -see LINK below.

  • ALSO - 9N KEY SWITCH
  • FWIW - JUST8Ns also sells a key switch just like the original dash mounted one used on the early '39-'40 9N's. The starter button and key switch don't care whether if 6V or 12V. The important thing is to have them and everything else wired correctly. Just to be clear, you do know the difference between a starter solenoid and the starter button switch, right? They are two different animals. The starter motor on all 9N and 2N tractors was a 1-wire unit that did NOT use a solenoid. I'm just curious though as to if you still have your original 9N generator and voltage regulator. If so, I'm buying -email is open.

  • You can use factory dash mounted starter switch, but if you want to use a key or other light duty switch for starting, the you need a solenoid.
