  • neighbor has an engine out of a 18 8N that "was running when removed" from the tractor. I am interested in it for a rebuilder for my early 8N. Neither one of us know what would be a fair price. Any ideas? I plan on rebuilding it , so - as long as it's not damaged beyond repair, the condition isn't and issue.

  • Caveat Emptor -buyer beware. Until you get the block torn down and boiled out to determine if any cracks are present, it's a gamble. Often if cracks are present, there will be witness marks of oil and or coolant on the engine block. Many sellers attempt to mask these issues when selling by applying new paint over them. Always be skeptical when buying a used tractor if there is new paint on it. WE cannot place a value on something we can't see up close, so anything to the sort would be an opinion/guesstimate. N blocks are always posted on fleabay -some are rebuilt, some are short stacks and could be cheaper than buying something blindly. Best to look at what is already listed to get an idea what prices are going at. But just because a seller has an asking price doesn't mean he sells it for that. Watch ebay tractor and part auctions and see how many actually sell. The market is and has been down for 10 years. Many of these have been listed over and over and never get any bids. You are going to invest at least $1200 to do a proper rebuild, so consider that. Maybe you can make a deal with your neighbor. Tell him you will strip down the block and pay to get it boiled out and inspected. If no cracks or stripped out threads are present, then make an offer. Just my opinion FWIW, you asked...
