  • 9N starter
  • Hi All - our 9N has broken the starter Bendix drive gear. The gear is fractured and stuck in the Bendix drive. Ideas on how this is happening? This happened a couple of months ago and the gear shattered and a part of it dropped into the clutch housing.
Any suggestions for purchasing a starter or Bendix drive assembly?
    All input is appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Maybe it isn't the right unit. ALL 9N & 2N starters never used a solenoid -what is yours? OEM should be a 6V, 1-Wire unit, no solenoid. It's your tractor and your $$$ so you can buy wherever you want. That being said, just so you know, YT sells parts from various suppliers that support them, they DO NOT manufacture any parts at all. They have a history of shipping wrong and/or defective parts. As far as TSC goes, well, if you need pricey chicken feed or bird feed, okay, but tractor parts? HA! Not me. Junk IMHO. As many here will testify to, always get the OEM unit rebuilt as a first choice. Option #2 would be to find an OEM unit and have it rebuilt. Have you tried JUST8NS for parts? SEE LINK

  • Aftermarket units today are only the later 8N style or after using a solenoid. Nobody makes the earlier 9N style. Internal parts will be about the same, brushes, armature, Bendix drive, et al.

  • The information on the Bendix drive assembly is very helpful. Back to first part of the original message - about a month ago, the Bendix gear on the other starter broke. Now the drive gear on the replacement starter has broken. So, have any of you had the experience of this gear breaking and did you find a cause? The next step will be to put on another Bendix assembly and see if it breaks.

    Thank you
    Les

  • Les,The improved drive also stayes engaged in the flywheel when starting. Not kicking out all the time when it almost starts but then the starter kicks out and you have to wait till the starter stops spinning to try starting it again.(VERY AGGRAVATING) You can get one at YT for a good price.

  • Take it to your trusty local starter shop and they will be able to fix you up if they know what they are doing.

  • Thank you for the replies. To restate- the gear on the Bendix drive broke. I am waiting for a response from the company I purchased the starter from a month ago. I have looked at these starter drives and they range in price from $20 to $50. How do we determine which brand is better? Same with the complete starter. Prices range from under $100 to approx. $225.
It is good to know that these parts are available from TSC. There is a store 10 miles from me.
    All input is helpful.
