  • I brought a used set of spider gears and cross off of fleabay and they look very rough including the cross. However, I mainly wanted the cross although it still has a lot of wear. The tractor that it came from definitely had some dirty fluid in it. However, I wanted to ask about some damage on the differential. Look at the photos; do you think it will be OK if I clean the area up with a dremel tool? The hole you see is where the broken cross arm came from.

  • I have one or two will check condition. Shipping should be a problem if your friends picking up the housing anyway.

  • Yes, my friend said he would drive over and pick them up. However, I am not sure when he will be coming down; might be later in the summer. Thanks so much for your help, it is much appreciated. I will get Dad's tractor running again.

  • The big unknown is how many pieces of metal will be circulating around inside continuing to cause damage. That differential scarring is bad. The big cracked chunk of casting near the pinion gear in one of your previous photos is even more of a worry.

No way would I consider trying to use that rear end housing or any parts in it on a tractor that I needed to work. The amount of work it would take to completely tear down, clean-out, replace, and rebuild just isn't worth the effort. Especially when that casting may not be repairable.

Finding a donor tractor with a locked-up or cracked engine for cheap or free is a much better (cheaper) way to fix it. Just swap the entire rear-end and it's done. It's a common sump, so if there is any question about loose bits getting into the transmission, I'd just put the good engine on the donor tractor and call it done. Splitting and swapping is a lot less work and expense than rebuilding anything.

Once the working tractor is good to go. Selling the good duplicate parts can often make back more than the donor tractor cost, even when I had to pay a rollback to go get it for me.

  • I will be replacing the centre housing. I need to pull the other wheel and trumpet. It is amazing the amount of damage that broken spider arm did; it must have been picked up and thrown with force to cause that. It is sad but it happens. I think it must have cracked many years ago when ice froze in the fluid and then sometime when I was using it, it broke the final bit.

  • It isnt velocity. When the differential gears jam very bad things happen. Wish I had taken a picture of the big hole in the case of the differential on my Ram 1500. That failure was caused by a pinion nut that worked loose and the pinion jammed in the ring gear. It looked like it had been hit by an RPG...

  • I would not even try. I realize you are operating on a tight budget but this is not something minor. Replace it with one that is not damaged.

  • There are lots of 8Ns kicking around.
I would think you should be able to find a usable complete rear end for $100 or less.
Check you local junk yard and ask around.
    One will turn up.
Someone on this forum must have one they aren't going to use.
