  • Activate three point on 8N with backhoe
  • I have a 1952 8N with a Dearborn loader and an 8ft Sherman backhoe. It has a two position shifter lever between the engine and the transmission. The three point arms are disabled because of the backhoe and I am told this is the way it left the factory. Does anyone know what is required to restore the 3 point operation once the backhoe is removed. I have been told also it is more valuable when selling with the three point mechanism functional.

  • The upper lift arms and links should still be there. You may need to find an adjustable right lift link (with the crank handle) and the two lower lift arms. The tractor hydraulics only work when the PTO shaft is turning, so the lever on the left side that used to run the backhoe hydraulics is now restored to original function and only engages the PTO shaft and hydraulic pump. Touch control lever on the right side raises and lowers the 3-point lift. Small lever under the right side of the seat switches from position control (up) to draft control (down) for plowing.

  • Which sherman trans handle do you have? The one on the left would be a (2 position) step up or step down trans. If you have this handle since it's a backhoe it would probably be a step up. If your handle looks like the one on the right it would be a (3 position) combo.
Hard to say about the 3pt because we don't know what is left on the 3pt. The arms might have been taken off to install the backhoe depending on which backhoe you have. Photos would help. Was your backhoe run off the PTO pump?

  • The handle is like the left one. It is a two function- step up - step down- arrangement. All external parts of the three point system - arms and activation handle- are there. Nothing happens when the handle is moved. The backhoe pump is externally mounted onto the PTO shaft and is activated by the lever on the left side of the tractor just below the driver seat.

  • On the 8n the lever than engages the pto must also be engaged to run the 3pt. If you push the clutch in it will disengage your pto/3pt. If nothing is happening with everything engaged then possible the valve on the pump might be stuck from years of not being used.

  • Need more info to answer your questions.

As Kirk said, pics would be very helpful to determine what you have vs. what you need.

Is the backhoe currently on the tractor, or has it been removed?

Depending on the model of Sherman backhoe, the tractor 3-pt hydraulics was only used to raise the outriggers (stabilizers). ...If the operating sequence was done incorrectly, damage to the tractor's internal hydraulics could have been done.

  • In the mid-50s dad bought a Sherman backhoe and Wagner loader for our '51 8N. I cannot tell you for sure the model of the hoe but, for sure, each outrigger was controlled by a separate control lever.
I just looked at "Manuals" section. It must have been a "C" model. 6 levers total

  • First, know that no Ford N ever left the (Rouge or Highland Park) factories with a backhoe, or front blade, or any other implement. Implements were always dealer supplied options. The Sherman Mfg. Co, was exclusive to FoMoCo as George and Eber Sherman had been involved since the Fordson days. You bought a new tractor from a local dealer. He would discuss what implements you might need and sell you a plow, disc, and/or cultivator too. Almost every tractor sold also came with plow. What good was tractor without a plow other implement? Here is a LINK to our MANUALS forum with some Sherman manuals listed if that helps...
