  • 3 brush generator, no field?
  • Purchased a 2n on the cheap and started rebuild. Pulled generator off and dropped it off. The guy said he couldn't find the Field to test it.
Numbers on the side: N10125 C2. There was a large 1.5 in wide metal strap covering the brushes. It does have 3 brushes.
    Can we rebuild and test?

    Thanks
    Israel

  • Tim Daley - email didn't accept my reply
  • Tim,
Can you email me again please? When I replied to your email, I received the following message: ESMTP server no available.

    Below is what I sent:

    Tim,
Thank you for the information...it definitely helps. I downloaded and read your article before posting...but still need to fill in some gaps.

The article's pictures didn't reflect what I had, however the pictogram on page two, lower right corner showed what I had.

The generator does have the Ford logo embossed/stamped on the case, which made me think it was OEM.

What's disappointing, is the place we took it too, was an "old school" shop, who incidentally rebuilt the generator for my early 8n.

I would like the information for the shop you use. Will they clean the inside?

See attached for a picture of our generator.

I like to try and make mistakes/attempts myself before asking questions, so I ask for your patience. Also, feel free to comment if I do ask a dumbass question (because I do think there are dumb questions).

Lastly, we have 9n303332. Attached is a picture of it.

    Thanks,
    Israel

  • Did you get all the pictures I emailed? If not I suspect that is your message. Did you get all the text? Part of your problem is your generator is not a Ford Tractor unit. It's Ford but an early V8 style. There should be no vent openings on the tractor unit. The 3rd Brush has an adjuster screw on the back end plate from HI to LO. There is no FIELD post on it. ALL 9N & 2N models used the 1-Wire, A-Circuit Design, 11 amp output generator after s/n 12500. They also must use the round-can cutout circuit mounted in the back of the dash on the steering column. By the way, ALL 9N & 2N models used a 1-wire starter with no SOLENOID. Solenoids weren't released until the 8N model in 1947 and also eliminated the cutout and opted for a square Voltage Regulator.

    9N & 2N ELECTRICAL after s/n 12500:

    2N10000 FORD TRACTOR GENERATOR:

  • Yes sir, I did get all pics and text. I will make another attempt today.

Could you email me the POC info for your generator rebuild? I will send to them once address is received.

    Thanks

  • Tim,
I appreciate the offer. I would prefer to get the one we have rebuilt for nestalgia. Do you have a person to recommend who can rebuild?

  • If you mean the one you originally have pictures, like I said, it isn't a tractor unit, it's an early V8 unit made for 65 amps. I rebuild Ford tractor starters, generators, carbs, distributors, governors, and more. My buddy owns and operates his own starter/alternator shop and is a Ford Tractor guy as well. He lets me use his shop and equipment and I buy lunch and a few other perks for him. It will be a few more days before my email is working again so reply here so I can plan.

  • Re: 3 brush generator, no field?
  • He probably couldn't find a Field to test is because he does not know 3rd brush generators. There is no external Field terminal, as it is connected internally to the 3rd brush and the case. See lower right.

  • Re: 3 brush generator, no field?
  • Where did you take it? look for a mom and pop generator rebuilder. Do you have the FO-4 service manual?

  • Re: 3 brush generator, no field?
  • Yeah, we too it to an "old school" shop that rebuilt my early 8n generator years back.

The FO-4 manual didn't picture the style generator I have. However, between it and the literature on this site, I think I can wire it up correctly once rebuilt.
