  • Splitting an 8N
  • I am splitting my 1948 8N to replace the ring gear. I have been following the instructions on Kevin LaRue's page. All has been going well so far, but I have just hit a snag. Kevin says that it is not necessary to remove the hood. He suggests removing the bolts holding the steering box to the transmission case and then lifting the steering box to clear the flange at the joint. This worked, but now the left hand steering arm won't clear the starter drive protrusion on the transmissin case. Should I lift the steering box another 3 or 4 inches? or is there another solution.

  • By the time the engine and transmission have moved that far apart, the input shaft should be out of the clutch. Lower the tranny or raise the engine to clear. Maybe try turning the steering wheel to move that steering arm back? I don't recall that being a problem.

  • Thanks, I'll try dropping the transmission when I get back at it tomorrow. I tried turning the wheel, but then the other arm interfered on the other side. The steering system is not great on this tractor and probably needs to be tackled next.
