  • Timing
  • I had an ant invasion on the coil on my '49 front mounted coil. I ended up replacing the coil, points, condenser. In order to get it static timed correctly, I had to fully retard the distributor. It seems to run fine but I'm concerned with the "why" this happened. Any input would be appreciated.

  • A good set of points from the New Holland dealer are a lot cheaper and more reliable then EI.

  • Re: Timing
  • The timing is going to vary according to the points. If you have them gaped at .015 then most likely the points are not to factory dimensions so you had to compensate with the timing.

  • Thanks Mark. I figured it wouldn't run as good as it does if the timing was off but I never encountered this before. Would you advise going to electronic ignition. I've had this tractor for about 12 years and learned a lot.

  • Re: Timing
  • EI is tricky on front mount set ups if it is still six volt. They work well if it is 12 volts.

  • It's a 12 volt. I just wondered if it's worth the money. In 12 years I've only changed points twice.

  • I don't have EI in any of my tractors so I'm not going to give advise on that. I have installed some for other people and they are happy with it.
